The effect of adalimumab upon work productivity

American researchers have recently collected data from 4 studies (ACCESS, CARE, CHOICE and EXTEND) concerning the work productivity of persons with mild to severe CD treated with adalimumab.

1,202 employees with CD were followed for a 20-week period. Questionnaires on productivity at work and impairment of activity (absence, presence and total work productivity impairment (TWPI) ) were analyzed.

Metanalyses enabled an evaluation of the  accumulated reduction in impairment of work productivity over a one-year period thanks to this treatment. Evaluation of the economy in indirect costs of patients during the year following the start of adalimumab was calculated using an annual average salary ($44,101).

The reduction in the absence rate generated $3,856 per patient, while the reduction  in the   TWPI generated $10,964.

In patients with mild to severe CD, use of adalimumab thus led to significant improvement both clinically and in terms of work productivity, with substantial savings in indirect costs.
